Idaho Society of Professional Engineers Update – May, 2017

FROM THE PRESIDENT:

This is it, my fellow engineers: Summer is on its way and so is the Annual Conference! See the plethora of information below on the riveting program our committee has put together – be sure to sign up soon, get your golf team put together and reserve a spot for the Old Castle tour on Friday afternoon. I hope you all plan to attend, engage and enjoy! This will be my last monthly update as we head into new leadership, led by current president-elect Seth Olsen, who will be inducted as your new State President at the conference. I appreciate all the support I have received from the Northern Chapter, the ISPE Board and my family. See you next month!

Boise Engineers Without Borders Golf Scramble

The local Engineers Without Borders (EWB) chapter is hosting a fundraiser golf tournament on Friday May 19th, at Warm Springs Golf Course in Boise. Openings for players and sponsors.
Money raised will be used towards the EWB project in Peru where they will be installing a groundwater well, pump, and (eventually) distribution system in the community of Villa America, which currently does not have access to clean water. See the golf flyer as well as information about the project in Peru.

·         NSPE urges California Department of Motor Vehicles to revise proposed autonomous vehicle regulations that do not adequately protect the public.

·         NSPE calls for full funding of Chemical Safety Board.

·         NSPE sends well-received e-mail to members, non-members and lapsed members communicating Society’s efforts in championing and protecting the PE license.

Ethical Guide to the Profession

·         May/June issue of PE magazine delves into sensitive issues in the engineering workplace.

Powering for Professional Advancement

·         NSPE launches an internship model as part of the Society’s Job Board.

Uniting the PE Community

·         NSPE officers and board members continue busy travel schedule visiting state societies and partner organizations during April.

·         2017 Candidate Screening Committee releases its report.

·         Progress continues on NSPE website mega menu project with completion anticipated in mid-May

·         NSPE receives Abila’s Excellence Award for Moving the Needle as an organization making significant improvement in implementation of its state-of-the-art membership database management system.

Championing the PE License

·         NSPE and State societies join forces on several advocacy fronts:

        ·         Nevada SPE and NSPE beat back last minute legislation that would erode occupational licensure in the state.

        ·         Maine SPE and NSPE continue efforts to oppose state legislation eliminating continuing education requirements.

Ethical Guide to the Profession

·         NSPE President to moderate panel discussion on ethics and autonomous vehicles at 2017 NAE Convocation of Engineering Societies; live stream available April 24 from 2-4 pm Eastern.

·         National Academy of Forensic Engineers (NAFE) reaffirms joint NSPE-NAFE position statement on Forensic Engineering.

·         Board of Ethical Review creates new PowerPoint presentation for use by national and state leaders.

Powering for Professional Advancement

·         Leadership and education sessions now confirmed for 2017 PE Conference in Atlanta.

Uniting the PE Community

·         NSPE’s Open Forum continues to generate online discussions on issues of importance to NSPE members.

·         2017 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition features 224 top mathletes.
