MATHCOUNTS is a national math coaching and competition program for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students created and run by the National Society of Professional Engineers, the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics, and the CNA Insurance Company. Participation in the program is through your school. MATHCOUNTS provides an opportunity for students to have fun while exploring areas of math that they may not see in their normal class curriculum. It also gives students a chance to be recognized for their achievements on both team and individual bases.

MATHCOUNTS has two major programs: the Competition Program and the Club Program.

In the Competition Program, schools receive math problems and activities that they can use to prepare for regional (chapter) competitions in February. Winning teams and individuals at the regional competitions advance to compete in the state competition in Boise in March. The top 4 individuals and the coach of the winning team from the state competition receive an all-expense-paid trip to Orlando, Florida to represent Idaho in the MATHCOUNTS National Competition in May.

In the Club Program (which is free), schools are provided the structure, activities, and problems they can use to form a math club. Participating schools are eligible for prize drawings.

Information on the Idaho MATHCOUNTS program is shown below. A link to the national MATHCOUNTS web site is at the bottom of this page.

Program Status Update - 11/28/2011

Registration is underway. We’ve only got 15 schools registered so far, and the 12/16 deadline is approaching! Late registrations will be accepted, as in the past, however, this year there is a $20 late fee. Please get your registrations in soon. If you’ve sent in your registration, please visit the main MATHCOUNTS web site to confirm that they received it.

If you do not receive the registration instructions, or have any questions about registration, please visit the main MATHCOUNTS web site at the link below, or contact your coordinator.

Please note that MATHCOUNTS has a referral initiative. If you refer another, new school to the program, and they register a team of 4 students, both schools will receive a $10 refund from their registration fees. In addition, any past-club-program school that registers for the competition program for the first time will receive the $10 refund.

The date and location of the North-Coeur d’Alene chapter competition have been added below.

Registration Deadline: December 16, 2011
