MATHCOUNTS is a national math coaching and competition program for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students created and run by the National Society of Professional Engineers, the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics, and the CNA Insurance Company. Participation in the program is through your school. MATHCOUNTS provides an opportunity for students to have fun while exploring areas of math that they may not see in their normal class curriculum. It also gives students a chance to be recognized for their achievements on both team and individual bases.

MATHCOUNTS has two major programs: the Competition Program and the Club Program.

In the Competition Program, schools receive math problems and activities that they can use to prepare for regional (chapter) competitions in February. Winning teams and individuals at the regional competitions advance to compete in the state competition in Boise in March. The top 4 individuals and the coach of the winning team from the state competition receive an all-expense-paid trip to Washington D.C. to represent Idaho in the MATHCOUNTS National Competition in May.

In the Club Program (which is free), schools are provided the structure, activities, and problems they can use to form a math club. Participating schools are eligible for prize drawings.

Information on the Idaho MATHCOUNTS program is shown below. A link to the national MATHCOUNTS web site is at the bottom of this page.

Program Status Update - 03/10/2013

Luke Harmon, an 8th-grade home school student attending the Treasure Valley Math and Science Center, won the individual competition at the 2013 Idaho State MATHCOUNTS Competition, becoming the first mathlete in the history of the program to win the Idaho state title three years in a row. North Junior High School of Boise won the team competition.

70 sixth, seventh, and eighth grade “mathletes” from 22 Idaho schools participated in the very challenging competition Saturday, March 9th. The competition, which was held at Boise State University, was hosted by the Idaho Society of Professional Engineers, and sponsored by Hewlett Packard Co., Micron Technology Foundation, and the three state Colleges of Engineering. Students vied for trophies, scholarships, and a chance to represent Idaho in the National MATHCOUNTS Competition.

Here are the results:
