MATHCOUNTS is a national math coaching and competition program for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students created and run by the National Society of Professional Engineers, the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics, and the CNA Insurance Company. Participation in the program is through your school. MATHCOUNTS provides an opportunity for students to have fun while exploring areas of math that they may not see in their normal class curriculum. It also gives students a chance to be recognized for their achievements on both team and individual bases.

Winning teams and individuals at regional competitions advance to compete in the state competition in Boise. The top 4 individuals and the coach of the winning team from the state competition receive an all-expense-paid trip to
Denver, Colorado  to represent Idaho in the Lockheed Martin MATHCOUNTS National Competition.

MATHCOUNTS Makes a Difference!

Program Status Update - 03/12/08

85 mathletes from 28 Idaho schools competed Saturday, March 8th in the 2008 Idaho State MATHCOUNTS Competition. The competition was held at Timberline High School in Boise. Students vied for trophies, scholarships, and a chance to represent Idaho in the National MATHCOUNTS Competition.

Individual
1st    Sam Faucher – Hillside Junior High School
2nd    Adam Jiang – Hillside Junior High School
3rd    Nick Davey – East Junior High School
4th    Kevin Hou – North Junior High School

These four students each received a $1,000 scholarship to the College of Engineering at Boise State University, the University of Idaho, or Idaho State University. They, along with the coach of the winning Hillside Junior High School team, Laurie Anderson, also received an all-expense-paid trip to Denver, Colorado, where they will represent Idaho in the National MATHCOUNTS Competition on May 9th.
