NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Contact: Julie Wall, 208-426-0636, ispe@rmci.net BOISE ENGINEER INDUCTED INTO THE IDAHO ENGINEERING HALL OF FAME Boise, Idaho – March 5, 2004 – To honor an engineering career that extended around the world, Lyman Wilbur, PE (1900-2001) has been inducted into the Idaho Engineering Hall of Fame. His selection was made by consensus of the Idaho Society of Professional Engineers (ISPE). This peer-nominated honor recognizes outstanding contributions to the profession and national or international achievement in the practice of engineering. Wilbur worked for Morrison Knudsen Company from 1932 until 1970, when he retired at the age of 70. He then continued as an International Consultant until he was 90. Wilbur worked on many large projects in ten countries around the world including a two-billion dollar military construction project in Vietnam and construction of the Great Salt Lake railroad causeway. In Idaho, he was head engineer during construction of Lucky Peak Dam, and the Brownlee, Oxbow, and Hells Canyon Dam Complex. Wilbur lectured at Stanford University and is the author of an article in National Geographic magazine and chapters in two engineering handbooks. Wilbur received numerous honors and awards throughout his long and distinguished career, including being recognized as an Honorary Member of the National Academy of Engineers, Honorary Doctor of Laws from the College of Idaho, and Honorary Doctor of Science from the University of Idaho. He was named Man of the Year in 1966 by the Engineering News-Record, and presented with the John Fritz Medal, which is considered to be the highest honor in the engineering industry, in 1972. His professional service included serving as Chairman of the Construction Division Executive Committee of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Chairman of the Pacific Northwest Council of ASCE, President of the Southern California Chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America, and Secretary-Treasurer of the Idaho Society of Professional Engineers. Maintaining the Engineering Hall of Fame is only one of the activities of the only society in Idaho to represent all engineering disciplines. ISPE works to ensure public safety by promoting quality engineering and increasing the expertise of Idaho’s engineers. The organization contributes to the public’s understanding of how engineers and engineering affect the daily lives of Americans.
