NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Contact: Julie Wall, 208-426-0636, ispe@rmci.net BOISE ENGINEER HONORED FOR LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT Boise, Idaho – March 5, 2004 – Quality engineering work and public service were the criteria that won Ellis Mathes, PE (1913-1995) induction to the Idaho Engineering Hall of Fame. His selection was made by consensus of the Idaho Society of Professional Engineers (ISPE). This peer-nominated honor recognizes outstanding contributions to the profession and national or international achievement in the practice of engineering. Mathes spent essentially all his professional working years with the Idaho Department of Highways from 1938 until his retirement in 1975. He was one of the pioneer State Traffic Engineers, constantly promoting traffic engineering as a profession. He was the first traffic engineers for the State of Idaho and was influential in establishing a strong traffic engineering organization and function in the Idaho Highway Department as well as in other states. Mathes was active as a Professional Engineer, serving as President and National Director of the Idaho Society of Professional Engineers and serving on the Idaho Board of Engineering Examiners. As State Highway Engineer and representative of the American Road Builders Association, Highway Research Board, and American Association of State Highway Officials, he had a strong influence on past highway legislation and made many appearances before Congressional Committees. In October 1987 Mathes established the "Ellis and Mabel Mathes Memorial Endowment Fund" in the College of Engineering at the University of Idaho, for outstanding students doing graduate work in the field of civil engineering. Maintaining the Engineering Hall of Fame is only one of the activities of the only society in Idaho to represent all engineering disciplines. ISPE works to ensure public safety by promoting quality engineering and increasing the expertise of Idaho’s engineers. The organization contributes to the public’s understanding of how engineers and engineering affect the daily lives of Americans. Growing the next generation of engineers by providing programs for elementary through high school students is also central to the mission of the society For information on ISPE programs, contact Julie Wall at 208-426-0636 or visit the ISPE Web site at www.IdahoSPE.org. ### |
