FUTURE CITY COMPETITION COMING TO IDAHO
IDAHO ENGINEERS TO SPONSOR COMPETITION FOR 7TH & 8TH GRADERS
The Idaho Society of Professional Engineers will be announcing that Boise, Idaho
will be a regional host site for the National Engineer’s Week Future City
Competition. This competition, for 7th and 8th grade students, consists of
designing a city using SimCity software and developing the city to at least the
year 2150. During the preparation process, the students work with an engineer
mentor that helps guide the team. After they design the city, the students make
a scale model of part of the city, prepare a 500 word essay, and perform an oral
presentation at the competition. The competition is an educational outreach
program that has components relating to numerous curriculum requirements so
teachers can incorporate this fun learning activity into their classroom.
Currently, Idaho schools must travel to Seattle to compete in this competition.
Next fall, the students will prepare for the Boise regional competition, which
will be held in January 2005. If 25 schools participate in the regional
competition, the regional winner gets to compete in the national competition in
Washington, DC (travel expenses are covered for the winning school).
This is a totally non-profit event hosted by volunteers (mostly engineers). It
is funded by individual and corporate contributions (qualifies as a charitable
tax deduction as allowed by law) and support from several local engineering
professional societies.
The Idaho Future City competition is sponsored by the Idaho Society of
Professional Engineers, the Southern Idaho Section of the American Society of
Civil Engineers, the Boise State College of Engineering, the Eastern Idaho
Council of Engineering Societies, and the Boise Section of the Institute of
Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
